May want to hear this interview with Race Director Joe Dixon. We yak about how he became a race director, his years as RD for IM Canada, and 3 things he's like to get off his chest as a race director. Some serious stuff, some fun stuff. Interview begins at about 5 minutes into the podcast # 29. http://www.fitspeek.com

Hey cool thanks for posting. The Westwood is coming up soon. Looking forward to it - I've got a 11-32 cassette on the Di2 bike, wonder if that is even enough w/ a standard chain ring.

11/32 is overkill. course is hilly but not ridiculous. ive done it twice.

Good to hear that. I like to spin. I have a 53/39 front but I think I should step that back to a compact. Due to the rough weather last year it was my 1st ride on the tri-bike of the year. Thought I would take it easy. No way to do that. I was a little more than bricked coming off the bike.

Joe's podcast interview was good. A lot of work putting on the races & comes with risks. Good to see the city councils etc stepping it up out here. I feel very fortunate that we have these great races on Vancouver Island. My PT does the Oliver every year she loves that event too. It looks amazing.

Side note: My wife has started a Tri-club/program up here in Port Alberni - by merging program elements of the TSUN swim club & AV Track club. I had nothing to do with it, other than got her a decent bike setup so she's confident to ride distances. Hope to groom some new triathletes because they are like zero in our town.

Thanks for posting. I'm a little south of you (Bellingham), but I've come up for many of Joe's races. Oliver is up there with the best, most well run races I've ever done. Remember the old Desert Half in Osoyoos? Bike course started literally at the base of Richter pass. That was a killer!! I'd like to do some of his fall races, I've heard good things, but never have because of CX season.

Osoyoos was a memorable race. The Desert Half! Richter in reverse. The Cultus races are Third weekend in September.

Thanks to that podcast and Joe's rant :), I joined in on as a volunteer for the Port Alberni 15K paper chase run.

The 2-3 hours flew by with lots to do. Our group was responsible for the run course through the historic Mclean sawmill site.

When cones and people were place, I ran a test loop - it was like running through an old Western movie set, but real!
I tweaked the course positioning a bit and then moved out onto the road area as i thought this was the highest safety risk for the kids directing the incoming runners to the site.

Volunteer Tip: I used my Phone to loop a cowbell sound effect.

I only did Desert Half once, but what an awesome course. I cracked a bit on the return climb over Richter. It was the only time I have ever climbed it west to east.
I recall the run being scorching hot... maybe into the 40's? Sufferfest.
So much fun.

That course is begging to be revived

Oh yeah, totally exposed, pan flat, and brutally hot. I doubt it was much below 90F in any of the three years I did it. 40C/104F? Maybe not that hot. That was a truly tough race. I "loved" how we did the hardest 40k of the oldIMC course, turned around, and then did it again in reverse. Third time I raced it I finally broke five hours and was ecstatic.

Thank you for the content! Awesome having Greg Cowan and Joe Dixon on back-to-back weeks.

Countless great memories from racing at Joe’s events, 16 of them since 2004. These past few years in particular have been a pleasure to watch; Dynamic started up around the time that both social media and obstacle racing really started to boom, and it’s great to see their events get better and better each year.

I honestly tried to stay away from triathlon last year, but Cultus was such a cleverly-laid trap that the tri-avoidance plan fell apart. The quality of the races themselves aside, too great people hang around those events to go a year without.

I didn't know about your podcast before this so I'll definitely give it a listen

I had a lot of fun at the Dynamic's events last year (the head to head race with Adam O'meara at Westwood was one of the highlights of my season last year!). I'll be back for Westwood, Elk and Cultus this year. Looking forward to it

Thanks! I keep telling people about how watching Ironman Penticton made you want to sign up and become a triathlete. I thought that magic feeling was just my Penticton Bias so it was great to hear some else articulate it.

I have always had a blast racing Joe's events. I was fortunate for the opportunities to have some epic battles out there with my role models back in the day JonnyO, Tom Evans, Scott Curry, Kyle Marcotte, Sean Bechtel, Olly Piggin, Kevin Cutjar and more! When I say back in the day I mean racing back in the day, they are still my role models! He forgot to mention a young Ben Hoffman raced Oliver back in the day as well! The Montana boys used to come up in force!

I am planning on coming back to Cultus again this year and hopefully more. My girlfriend and I had a blast camping there and walking over to the race in the morning! Not too mention rj_tri, NateChampness and Anothony Toth made me get real ugly!

I am hoping for dynamic events to announce they are holding a long distance triathlon in Penticton the last week of August. Come on Joe, make it happen!

Steve Brown from the "3-Lakes Series" also had a 1/2 IM in Osoyoos one year. The bike was much easier, as it was just a modified version of Joe's Oliver course. But damn! Was it hot! Must have been 42 on the run & we were done (well many of us) by noon. The NO wetsuit swim didn't help either.

I once heard an attractive female say about the Osyooos Half run, "I pee'd myself to try and cool down". That definitely qualifies as getting ugly!

I lucked out when I raced it in 2009 and there was cloud cover while we were running!
