I'm still wrapping my head around the fact he was only 53 when that show started. And only 15 years older than Grammer.

He actually appeared in an episode of Cheers; he played a character that wrote jingles for commercials.

Pouring out a Ballantine Ale for one of the great character actors and TV dads. He was awesome as Marty Crane, and also in Say Anything (especially the scene where he's curled up in the tub when he realizes his scam is up and he's going to jail - doesn't say a word but the look on his face and his body language says it all). I also liked him in Moonstruck as the lonely college professor and also in Eight Men Out as manager Kid Gleason.
Agree with jpo that hard to believe he was my age now when Frasier first aired (he looked close to 70 then); also didn't take up acting until he was in his late 30s, which makes his talent even more impressive. RIP indeed.
