The New Airhub Pro (Resistance Unit)

This actually has fewer features than the original Air Hub. Instead of Bluetooth or Ant+ connectivity and relying on a power meter and your smartphone it simply has a toggle switch between Off, 1, and 2. Mode 1 adds 1 watt for every 1km/h, and Mode 2 adds 2 watts for every 2km/h. Price has come down from the original version. About $1,000. That's still pricey for what it is but I like the idea for those who choose to train on a bike trail or who would like to get a workout in while riding a bike with a family member or significant other that doesn't have the engine to go more than 10-15mph.

I buy lots of stuff I don't really need as part of my cycling habit, and for me at least, the original version was something interesting and on my list of nice-to-haves, but pretty far down that list... like really far... but the new version would push it right off. The cool thing about the original version is that it would allow you to do outdoor ERG intervals... or keep you right at your LT HR... similar to what many of us do indoors on a trainer. It might be cool do do those sorts of intervals outdoors as well... though TBH it's not that hard, for me at least, to do them with a PM and computer and rely primarily on RPE to hit the right level of effort.

So while I can reach a bit and make a case for why if I won the lottery I would buy the original version, it would seem I could accomplish the same thing as the new version by swapping to Gatorskins or Tufos.

Maybe the product they should be offering is the AirSpoke, where you turn one or more really wide spokes sideways so that they offer greater wind resistance.

i find this product quite interesting from the perspective of being able to do hard intervals outside at much slower speeds.

but there has GOT to be a way to do this for a lot less cash.

I would consider something like this so the Mrs and I could ride together and get similar workouts. But at $1000, with no way to change the resistance level without stopping, I'm more inclined to eventually upgrade her her an e-bike.

In the meantime, I think I could get about the same effect as setting #1 by running Gatorskin tires at 70 psi.

That's what I like about it as well. Around where I live there just aren't many places for me to ride a TT bike. I refuse to ride on the road and, while I have great bike trails near me, realistically it's not safe for me to be going 20-30mph+ on a TT bike. An Airhub + Gatorskins + Butyl tubes could drop that down into the 15mph range. I agree though, $1,000 is too steep for the utility provided. It seems to be a Chicken/Egg problem with Airhub with regards to price point and demand.

IMO, the most intriguing application of the original Air Hub was to use it to have an erg mode on rollers.
