Turbo Sessions on 1 leg

I have ruined my knee. Broke the top of the Tibia, ligament damage and cartilage damage. (still awaiting results on MRI to ascertain the level of damage)

It has been 8 weeks now on crutches and it is driving me mad. I can swim but struggle to get to the pool due to being unable to drive, so was thinking about getting back on the turbo.

I haven't actually checked to see if it is possible, but im in a removable knee brace so as long as I can keep my bad leg out of the way I should be able to pedal one legged.

Is it going to be of any benefit or should I just wait it out. I understand I wont be running for a long time or even cycling properly but I am mainly just bored of watching daytime TV

Any suggestions for some good sessions?

Sorry to hear of your injuries.

Have you ever tried one-legged drills on the turbo trainer? If so, you probably have an idea of what you'd be letting yourself in for, but if not, I'll tell you right now, it's a very different beast to two-legged cycling. Getting your dodgy leg out of the way is the least of your problems; on most turbo trainers you can just move it back and rest it up on the top of the frame of the trainer, but the actual process of pedaling with just one leg and muscling your way through the deadspots that make up ~60% of the pedal revolution is very difficult and tiring.

Sure, it's great for para-athletes who have to make do with one leg (and some doing so exceptionally well), but I would think the fitness benefits would be minimal and possibly even counterproductive (e.g. introducing massive L-R imbalances) for someone who will be returning to bi-lateral cycling.

If you can do anything else, e.g. swimming, reading, knitting, learning a new language/skill/hobby, I'd fill my time with that instead!

How did you manage to do this? Sounds extremely painful. I'd let a Dr. tell me what I could do so you don't prolong or make the injury worse.

Surely you're going to cause huge strain and imbalance on your posture doing this?
I presume there are athletes with only one leg who pedal single sided all the time, but I don't know how it effects them. I know there's athletes with partial limbs on one side who seem to do fine with prosthetics, but they're supported and loading both sides of their body somewhat equally so I wouldn't think they have the same issue.

I would expect something like swimming that allows aerobic exercise without such dramatic postural problems would be a better idea?
If you do decide to do this, maybe consider taking the crank of the unused side if possible, and at least the pedal otherwise, so you can at least sit somewhat straight.

I just turned, not sharply, not fast not anything. I was maybe just above jogging pace (I wasn't out running or anything) and next thing I am on the floor feeling like I am about to shit myself through pain.

Apparently the Tibia was broken by the fibia crashing down into it. As for the ligaments and cartilage, the specialist believed my foot must have got stuck and I exert a lot of turning force through the knee. I still have no idea how I managed it, im only 26 but maybe I have the knees of an 80 year old.

Thanks above for the advice on one legged sessions. Maybe I just won't bother but the boredom is cracking me up. Just need to get in the pool more and hope that helps

Best take it easy and work on upper body until you heal
