Out of the Sport a Long Time - Picking a Bike
Quote | Reply
Does anyone know, with any degree of accuracy, what the difference, in time/watts/whatever, between a bike like the old work horse Cervelo P2 or P3 and a new "super bike" like the Felt IA or Canyon Speedmax? I've been out of the triathlon game for a long time and am looking to get a new bike (I sold my previous Felt DA) to start competing again. I'm on a limited budget of ~$3500 and I want to know if I would be better off getting a cheaper bike, like the P2 (P3), and getting some decent wheels or getting a nicer used bike and buying wheels down the line (6-9 months). If we're only talking 30-60 seconds over the course of a 70.3, then I'll likely stick with the cheaper option, but I can't find any real data anywhere.

For reference, I've already got powermeters that can be swapped from my cross bike, so I don't need a new once of those.

Thanks!

I made the latter choice. I got into this just 2 years ago, and I started with a Felt IA16. At the time, there really were not that many top tier choices below the $3K price point. Then, 9 months down the road I got wheels. I am so glad I did it that way.

IMHO, I do not consider the P2 a "cheap" option. Its MSRP is $2,800, which is kind of high for its vintage, component set, and performance level. Now, if you can find an old stock for a lot less, it becomes cheap. But you could apply the same argument to a Felt IA16 or Speed Concept. Cervelo gets a lot of gross margin on its brand name for its low end bikes.

Many of the superbikes will be slower because the bars limit the position you can get into.
P2/P3 only incrementally behind the P5, which is still the fastest superbike. So it's going to be pretty comparable to superbikes from other brands.

I've got a 7 year old P3 knock off. I haven't seen a new bike in years I thought was worth paying money to upgrade to.

I bet you can get pretty nice wheels and a bike for under $3500.

It’s hard to beat the Premier for price vs components vs speed

Maybe I’m not looking at the right place, but their cheapest offering seems to be $4750, which is $1250 out of my price range. Looks like a cool bike though!

Yep, it is above your budget. But, I did not have time to write that, because I had to beat the other two guys posting.

The first thing I'd do is read this: http://www.slowtwitch.com/Tech/Triathlon_Bikes_in_the_Age_of_Peak_Aero_6429.html

That will give you a give starting point for time savings/lost.

You probably won't be bothered, but should be aware that disc brakes are going to be widespread in the not-too-distant future.
