Sound of Music

Family watched the movie last night. I was all misty eyed thru half of the damned thing, even tho of course I've see it several times.

I was stationed in Europe in the early '90's. Did lots of skiiing in Austria and chasing Austrian ski-bunnies in the bars at night. Was always surprised how few Austrians knew of the movie.

3 of my 4 grandparents were US born of German parents so I've always felt a cultural connection. Last month when I learned our veterinarian had married into the Von Trapp family, I resolved that the boys (13, 13 & 14) had to see the movie. Good for them get a little taste of how seemingly reasonable people can get caught up in totalitarian fervor. When the teenage boy that liked Lisle tried to stop the family from escaping, I talked to the boys about some of the "basic guy rules" like "be a force for good no matter how cool the badguy uniforms", that I've strong feelings about.

Recall that Captain Georg Von Trapp, early in the movie was a rigid hard-ass. Family says the only my lack of a boatswain's whistle separates me from him.

Shopping for a whistle.

Awesome movie.

I was disappointed to learn that Christopher Plummer didn't do any of his singing, apparently he wasn't very good even after singing lessons. Although in this clip he's really not that bad.

My mother's side is Austrian and German so I was forced to watch this movie as a young boy. I've come to love it. I watch it every winter and it brings me such a warm feeling.
For the longest time I thought "Edelweiss" was an old Austrian folk song. Turns out it was written for the Broadway play in the 1950s. Also, the real Captain Von Trapp was a decorated U-boat commander in WW 1.

Lol, I thought that about Edelweiss too.

I looked into the real story of the Von Trapp family last night. That was a mistake. It's not nearly so romantic. I should have left that alone. Still, it brings a grin to my face to interact with one of the Von Trapps. On Thur the dogs are going to "puppy prison" for a couple days so I'll see her then.

The songs by Rogers and Hammerstein are some of my favorite things.

One of my favourite movies! When I was in my early teens I rented this from the video store so many times that the tape wore out and they had to get more copies. Also had a book that followed up the story after they escaped. I seem to remember an incarceration when they got to the US because Maria was too enthusiastic about how long she wanted to stay. Or maybe I'm making things up.

Haven't seen it in years but now I feel the urge to go hunting through the library catalogue.

I played Friedrich (one of the von Trapp sons) in our school's version of the musical in 1968.

Friedrich "I'm 14, I'm impossible!"
Maria "Who told you that?"
Friedrich "Fräulein Josephine, four governesses ago."

Of course, the entire cast joined in from the wings for the song "Climb Every Mountain". Good times.

I always liked when Capt. von Trapp coldly says "You'll never be one of them" to Rolf after disarming him. Great movie.

By early teens you mean too young to get in the porn section?
