POTUS NOTAM (Zone of Death)
I flew a lot of hours in the USAF, but none of it was after 9/11. I read today where some USAF F-16's intercepted a light aircraft 29 miles from Mar-a-Lago and escorted it until it landed. Made me think, "Jeepers, what kind of restricted airspace do they have there?" I looked up the NOTAM (notice to airmen), and it turns out there's a 10 NM "zone of death" where you can't fly at all below 18,000 feet whenever Trump is there. Out to 30 NM you have to get clearance and be flying to or from an airport.

NOTAM : 7/7231 Location : Palm Beach, FL, Thursday, December 21, 2017 through Monday, January 01, 2018 Local

We didn't have anything like these sorts of restrictions back in the 70's-90's when I was flying, whether it was the POTUS or the Queen of England. I'm sure restrictions like this must have been around for Bush (II) and Obama, but what a PITA it would be for the pilots affected.

Our local airport had to adjust their take off and landing approaches when Ronald Reagan was at his ranch in Gaviota, 20 miles away.

This closure is a nightmare for a couple of small airports near Mar-a-Lago, which essentially have to shut down during this time (no lessons, no fuel sold, etc.). Then there are the restrictions in NJ when he is in Bedminster that similarly affect some airports and their businesses there.

Whatevs.

How often do a couple of fighters get scrambled to intercept a light aircraft that's stumbled into this restricted airspace? Apparently, not every time, but it does happen.

"Of the dozens of violations during the president’s 10 visits to Palm Beach County, at least six violators were intercepted by military aircraft. The intercept on Sunday was the only intercept by fighter jets during the president’s holiday visit."

I guess you've got to do what you've got to do, but this seems excessive.
