Anyone bought lately or have thoughts on a quality sub $500 laptop? Will be used mainly for surfing internet, word/excel/PowerPoint work, and light gaming at most. Any input is appreciated.

for the activities you list no one should pay m ore than $500 for a laptop. Look for features you like: touch screen, connections (USB, HDMI, etc), keyboard feel, etc.

I was in a very similar situation last year and bought a $400 HP laptop with touch screen for the kids. The HD was noisy and it was a little slow on startup and loading so I popped in a $100 Samsung ssd and the thing is a rocket ship compared to stock.
