The Most Expensive Mile of Subway Track on Earth: Guess Where?
Why, the Big Apple, of course. I know, I know... what a shock. ;-)

Costs now come out to $3.5 BILLION for each new mile of track. That's big, even by Big Apple standards. But if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, right?

Being serious, this project appears to have offered waaaaay more than the normal NYC opportunities for graft and corruption and folks naturally took advantage of that fact:

"Workers in the East Side Access tunnel, which will connect Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan with the Long Island Rail Road. The project’s costs have ballooned to nearly $3.5 billion for each new mile of track."

An accountant discovered the discrepancy while reviewing the budget for new train platforms under Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan.

The budget showed that 900 workers were being paid to dig caverns for the platforms as part of a 3.5-mile tunnel connecting the historic station to the Long Island Rail Road. But the accountant could only identify about 700 jobs that needed to be done, according to three project supervisors. Officials could not find any reason for the other 200 people to be there.

“Nobody knew what those people were doing, if they were doing anything,” said Michael Horodniceanu, who was then the head of construction at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which runs transit in New York. The workers were laid off, Mr. Horodniceanu said, but no one figured out how long they had been employed. “All we knew is they were each being paid about $1,000 every day.”

The discovery, which occurred in 2010 and was not disclosed to the public, illustrates one of the main issues that has helped lead to the increasing delays now tormenting millions of subway riders every day: The leaders entrusted to expand New York’s regional transit network have paid the highest construction costs in the world, spending billions of dollars that could have been used to fix existing subway tunnels, tracks, trains and signals."

Should have brought in consultants...

I'm sure most of those 200 folks were people persons. They talk to people!

Eh, The Bobs would have sorted all this right out. ;-)

Were they actually paid $1000, or was their company charging them out at $1000 a day and paying them $300?

Long Chile was a silly place.

Face it. Boston held that honor for years so it makes sense that NY would go after it.

Probably, the latter. But they're still paying $1,000 a day for employees that no one can seem to figure out if they were doing much of anything

There's also the strong possibility that these were union positions and a good deal of featherbedding was going on, with union bosses hooking up favored friends and relatives and the subway authority and various contractors knowingly winking at the practice in order to keep labor peace.

And never discount the possibility of influence by the bent-nose guys. ;-)

All strong possibilites.

When I read the thread title, I thought the city in question would be Rome.

Rome was building a third subway line through the old city that was already 9 years behind schedule, part of the reason being every metre they dug, they came across ancient artifacts or sites that had to be careful excavated and preserved, etc. And, while I'm just speculating here, there may be a chance of some corruption or mob interference there... Just maybe.

The union corruption in NYC is child's play compared to what goes on in Italy!

As someone who works in construction, and who lives in one of the most left leaning cities, where our freaking mayor is so SJW she refers to white people as "settlers", don't even get me started on that subject.

When excavating for new homes, if you come across human bones (which actually does happen) it's best just to not tell a soul lest the natives find out.

Lived in Italy (Sicily, actually). We paid a monthly fee, as part of our rent, that we knew went to the local Mafia folks so that they wouldn't steal stuff from our homes or steal from our cars. It was part of living in that town, I guess. ;-)

Not as sacred as a new casino, apparently.

What if they are settler bones?

Where in Sicily? I spent a couple months there in 2008. Really interesting island, but I was completely blown away at the almost comical relationship/stranglehold the mafia had in certain areas.

I still think Taormina is one of the most visually stunning places I've been.
