California Fires.

Is this the usual time of year for them, or is it due to the extended drought

When was the last time such extensive fires were happening at this time of year.

Unusual. There's been zero rain in So Cal, and not much in Nor Cal. Usually the fires end in Oct./Nov., depending on when the rains arrive.

Also, last winter was a rainy one, so there's lots of fuel to burn.

Only because the fires usually happen is October but they didn’t (in my area) this year.

I’ve heard repeatedly over the last couple weeks that there has “no measurable rain in Santa Barbara since last February” but it poured cats and dogs on Labor Day weekend.

This. And the drought was declared over yet now we are hearing that the drought is in its 7th year (which it isn’t) and that that’s “unprecedented” (which it isn’t).
