Driverless Cars May Make Transportation Free for Everyone... With a Catch
Quote | Reply
The coming decade in autonomous cars and transportation could prove to be an exciting time. The ability of autonomous vehicles to operate safely out on the streets is seemingly improving by the day and at least two of the Domestic 3 automakers (Ford and GM) are investing in a big way in the technology, in addition to the work Uber and other companies are doing. Now comes the promise that driverless transportation may even be completely and totally free. "Summon a car and travel for nothing," as the linked article says.

There's just one little catch...

"But these prognostications miss what will be one of the biggest developments of all: In a world full of autonomous autos, transportation will become free. Not just hands-free, or driver-free, or go-wherever-you-want free. But free as in beer: complimentary, gratis. Summon a car and travel for nothing—that is, so long as you are willing to make a stop or two en route at sponsoring locations.

Picture a not-too-distant future where a trip across town is available to anyone who will spend 15 minutes in McDonald’s on the way. Not a fast-food fan? Then for you it’s Starbucks, a bookstore, the game parlor. Rides with a child stop at the Disney store, while teenage girls are routed via next decade’s version of Zara and H&M. Unlike today’s UberPool, with its roundabout routes and multiple passenger pickups, “UberFree” features tailor-made routes and thoughtfully targeted stops."

Doesn’t sound so bad, does it say you have to get out of the car at the stops? If you don’t, you get a 15 minute power nap, if you do, you go sit on a bench in front of the store and enjoy the fresh air (we’ll, fresh air depends where you live...)

I’m more opposed to driverless cars in general, just as a car enthusiast. I’m one of the many who think that everyone should have a driverless car, besides me ;)

I'm a Motown car nut myself. I love classic Detroit iron, believe me. And I"ll always have at least one car in my garage. I'm more hopeful for driverless car technologies for those who can't afford transportation and for the elderly who can no longer drive. It also seems like it would make sense in certain urban situations. Time and tide wait for no man, though, and the tech is coming whether we like it or not. :-)

It's exactly the same as all of the free public transportation available to the public now, right? Like those free busses and free trains.

Heh. No such thing as a free bus around these here parts. The Q Line downtown (sponsored by Quicken Loans) offered free rides when it first opened but I think they charge, too. Any other trains or train-like trams (including the downtown Detroit People Mugger (I mean, "Mover")? Fughedabboutit. ;-)

Sound a lot like the free trips to Atlantic City and Las Vegas.

This happened to me in Thailand. The hotel package that I bought in arriving at Bangkok included a driver and a full day tour the next day.

It was amazing. The tour guide (not the driver) showed us the sights and held our spot at places while we explored.

We made two unannounced stops:
1) ruby and emerald place
2) tailor

Played the game and looked around at the first place then ended up buying custom made pants and shirts at the tailors (delivered the next day to the hotel).

Well worth it.

Don’t want to give anyone ideas but sounds like a great opportunity for time share sales.

The door doesn’t Open until you sign a contract.

Maybe, But as some have pointed out, hard to know what they do when you open the door and let them out.

Lots of interesting things in this space. Cost goes way down, and as batteries get cheaper it gets cheaper and cheaper.... But how do you collect? how do you identify who is the customer? Bus type or small shuttles? Individual car types? fixed route or free form? What would people pay for in a premium transportation? oh so many questions.

It will be (is) an interesting time in this field.

Reminds me of the axiom (generally applied to technology) that if you're not paying for the product, you are the product.

While in college, my roommate and I made a couple trips to Atlantic City.

Bus ticket from Bethlehem, PA to AC: $18

Included was a coupon for $17 in quarters at one of the casinos.
