Lensatic compass, Ranger beads and a 1:35,000 or 1:50,000 map. That's all you need. ;-)

I took a number of land-nav courses during my career, never once were we allowed GPS. Compass, protractor, map, and ranger beads were all that was between getting done with all your way points hit and spending a long ass day walking around the woods.

Didn’t the USNA bring back required courses in celestial navigation at some point? Is this the reason why?

I know back in my day Marine Corps Aerial Navigators were still taught and practiced using sextants for celestial navigation. I'd bet they still do, the Marine Corps is quite hesitant to solely rely on a single means of navigation. Especially one that can be jammed or otherwise compromised.

Well this could explain all these short ironman courses, but you would think the Chinese would have a patch from their Ruskie friends....
