It's always amusing to see people argue about Olympic medals. If their country won the most gold medals, that is proof of being the best. If, their country didn't win the most golds but won the most medals, that is the way to prove you are the best.

Oh, and it can change from year to year.

Yes, I remember vividly when Donovan Bailey won the 100m Gold, which comes with the "World's fastest Man" title. Nope, not that year. Michael Johnson was being dubbed by Americans as the "World's Fastest Man". Then they ran head to head in a 150 m race and Bailey crushed Johnson.
