I have lived in a moose-intensive environment for 30 years. I used to know an ER physician who had extensive experience fixing up people who had hit moose. His advice was "Get your head down." Many of his ER cases involved people who had been scalped. You hit the moose, your bumper takes out its legs, and the body of the moose peels the roof of the car back. At some point your scalp gets in the way. His advice was to duck down and let your airbag do its thing.
I've hit two moose; my wife has hit one. Too many close calls to count. The last encounter I had ended up with a totaled pickup and a dead moose I helped pull off the road. I barely touched the young bull crossing the road; the pickup coming the other way T-boned him.
