Cool Cassette Tools For Installing or Removing a Cassette
Quote | Reply
Just discovered some fantastic tools for removing or installing cassettes from Park Tools.

I used to use the following
  • An Adjustable Wrench
  • Lockring Tool
  • Chain Whip

Park came out with a lockring tool that has a handle, so you don't need the adjustable wrench any more. They also brought out a cassette wrench that can replace the chain whip. The cassette wrench is awesome and so easy to use.

That means you only need 2 tools now instead of 3 and it is much easier with these 2 tools to accomplish the same task.

The tools to checkout are the
  • FR-5H Cassette Lockring tool
  • CP-1 Cassette Pliers

I got both of mine on Amazon

Abbey tool works had one out before Park did.
(ie Park copied Abbey, Not sure if Abbey copied someone else).

Also, the Crombie stores inside the handle of their Chainwhip.

That Abbey tool looks pretty slick. It's cool that it works with both Shimano/SRAM and Campagnolo, something the park tool doesn't do.

One nice thing about the Park Tool is you can replace the cassette tool head if it wears out.

I would say the Abbey tool might be a better option since it has both Shimano and Campy heads. The Park Tool is legit though. A very solid professional tool.

Hold the Crombie tool in your hand.....once you do your definition of 'solid professional tool' will change for the better. I'm not saying the park tool is bad, the crombie is just that much nicer to use than anything park has ever made.

Park tools are at best competent. Abbey bike works tools are functional works of art.

p.s. if you are wearing out the spline of a cassette lockring tool either you need better tools or your head needs to be re-calibrated.

I would agree on park tools i.e. they are solid, purposeful, cycle specific tools but based on the tools I have had in my hands, I can't see why they get raved about so highly on the cycle forums ?

Anyhow, never seen the need to mention it before but you gave me the perfect opotunity ... lol

I bought the Park shop chain tool a long time ago. The handle got harder and harder to turn and the thing started to get warm.

They once made a dishing tool that didn't work, believe it or not.

I had a tool l like that in the mid 1990s - don't recall the maker. And another one I got from Nashbar about 10 years ago.

Abbey Tools has been making a superb tool like this for awhile, though I've never tried it.

I like Park Tools. They are nice. But not super. But a nice thing about the company is the extensive learning they share online. Very nice

The Abbey Crombie is a sweet tool. The Pedro Vice Whip is a great shop option.
