IMFL 17 race report – 9h32 – 30th OA / 5th in 40–44
Quote | Reply
They say Florida is a fast course. Maybe, but it didn't feel that fast on Saturday. I had a okay swim (for me, 73min), a good bike (4h50), and pretty good run (3h20) to bring it home in 9h32. That's a personal best by a handful of minutes, so I'll take it. It's also good enough for 30th overall and 5th in 40–44. And yes, there were only 4 KQ slots in that age group. Life is hard.

Full report is here.

I also can't see it.

It was definitely a fast year, due to the relatively low winds.

says I may be a bot so need to enter security code. Doesn't work for me but that could be my computer.

The winds were relative low, but I've done it in 2011, 2013 and this year. In 2011 I remember needed long pants and jacket post race due to the temp. In 2013 I remember thinking, "this is a little warmer that 2011" on the run and this year thinking, "this sun is brutal. Do whatever you can to find shade" I was actually looking forward to the neighborhoods.

Ok, fair enough. I was going primarily based on AG times from last year, and also talking to a few people who've raced it before. The only year I did it was 2014 (canceled swim year). It was definitely hot on the run, but those winds made for a very flat ocean and a very fast bike. I realize it's not an apples to apples comparison, but in 2016 there were only 3 guys in M45-49 to go sub 10, and this year it was 11.

That's darn close to KQ! I feel your pain... Have you been before or is that your closest miss? Congrats on an excellent race nonetheless!

I've never been to Kona and, frankly, I probably wouldn't go. But I still want to be invited!

Well done Arnaud. Even when training doesn’t go exactly as planned, you somehow always figure out execution on race day. It’s been a lot of fun to shave these 2h off your IM time. All we have to do now is get you a Kona slot that you can snob ;)

Ouais 9h32, t'aurais pu en faire plus...

Kidding of course. That is a solid time sir and if François wants it to happen, I am not sure you have a choice.

Great job Arnaud!! And when you get the Kona invite, I'm putting money that you will accept. btw speaking of money, it was $1k this year on Active receipt.

I started at the front of the 1:10 group, swam 1:08 and had very clean no contact swim. I did stick along the inside of the buoys until I got to the corner buoys. Works great on that course for a right sided breather like myself.

Curious to why you think 2000 cal on bike isn't enough....

2000 kcal sounds right, but somehow I felt sluggish on the last third of the bike, which usually doesn't happen. Maybe I ended up not taking 2000 kcal. I should really stop eyeballing my nutrition and properly figure it out.

How was the rest of your day?

I had an unexpectedly great race on low training volume. 9:50 and won male 55-59. PR for the distance and my first AG win at the full distance.

On the nutrition side, I've just gone to drinking Gatorade Endurance, as much as I can stand, and picking up a few gels on the bike. I did carry a bottle containing Red Bull but otherwise I just get whatever the course provides. Less to worry about and works for me.

Congrats on the win and the PR!

Maybe I should give a shot to rely solely on course nutrition as you mention. It is, indeed, one fewer thing to worry about.
