An seasoned ironman told me to get a thermal skull cap for Coeur d'Alene 70.3 next year. Any recommendations?

All apparel brands offer them. Just pick one from your favorite brand
EDIT: Oh I think you are looking for one for swimming?

Aquaman. Bought mine for Racine this year at the expo for $25. Used it on the practice swim and then they cancelled the swim as it was too cold.
It kept my head warm swimming in 57F water.

Make sure you try before you swim with it. They don't bother me but the chin strap makes quite a few claustrophobic. imho you don't need one for the the cda 70.3. You can get by with doubling up on regular swim caps.

B70 thermal - the one with the 'brushed', fleece-like material, makes a big difference between that and a regular neoprene cap.
Same material as the B70 thermal helix, which is bloody awesome.

I am far from the toughest guy around, and did all my practice swims w/o wetsuit, and then wore sleeveless wetsuit during race, no issues.
You have received bad advice IMO.
