Bike with no base bar....
Say you had a flat fast course Iron distance. No technical turning and could figure out how to put the brakes somewhere...for sake of argument put them at the tips of the aero bars and had the push button shifters somewhere down the tubes. (humor me)

What would the aero savings be if you removed the base bar? I am trying to figure out why the need for them and why they stick out as far as they do only to hold the brakes? I understand the need for handle bars on a beach cruiser but on a tt bike it seems they would just catch wind?

humor me here but for sake of discussion...

Check out Natascha Badmann's bike. She's been pretty successful with that goofy looking thing (pink).

My on the road testing yielded 1 seconds per kilometer savings. That was using the old Vision blade levers and an aluminum Vision bar. I cut off most of the upturn on the base bar so the only a little bit was sticking up. I suspect if you bought a newer flatter aerobar than your savings would probably be somewhat less.

It's actually not so crazy an idea when you install your own aerobars. First thing you think - WTF, what if I just went without the base bar and spared myself the install! Then you realize the aerobars have to mount on something...
