More world class races please

So, after a real carnage race like yesterday I can't believe it is one entire year until we will see all of the top guns battling it out again.

I know that you can only do a limited number of long course races during a year at a high level. Maybe about two. So why not enjoy two (or three) high level races?

Of course Kona is Kona and can't be topped. It will and should always stand above all other races.

But with Kona being like the Tour de France, or Wimbledon, why not establishing something like the Giro and Vuelta (or Australien, French and US Open). Something that is not as important as Hawaii but can still lurk the top contenders to the line.

It is not interesting to have a weekly ironman race and each one has one or two or none of the top guys in it. So make those races for the newer and second tier pros where they can gather points and qalify for the top races. (Like Suttons idea with the League system).

Yes, lots of Pros would still only show up to one of these two non Kona races or would only go through it to qualify. But it would still guarantee much more competition and tighter races.

No, because they are too many and not sicnificiant enough. They reward with more qualifying points. But for the top guys thats not important as they are usually already qualified.

Chatting about this with a mate over coffee today.

We think it was really interesting because different athletes tried to smash their best disciplines, rather than everyone conserving pace behind the expected winner/top 3 overall in the hope that would be the best strategy. This meant lots of real battles, switching up of placings, people fading/blowing up (not great for the athlete but more entertaining to watch).

At the end of the day the best runner (who is also the best swinbikerun 'er ) won, but other individuals tried to smash the swim and smash the bike and mix up the race and that was great to watch.

If you took away the KPR and just used these races as the basis for Kona entry, you'd have what you want. Top 10 pros for each gender on each continent. Voila! You've significantly upped the quality of these races.

I doubt this is what Ironman would want - since it frees up their pros to race elsewhere, but if it's entertainment you want...

Until Ironman puts up big prize money for another big race, there will not be another big Ironman race that the better pro's attend.

They have obviously tried other championship races and seem to not care if they are well attended.

That's my opinion anyway
