Venge rear shifter cable problem
Need some advice on how to fix an issue with my Venge rear derailleur cable. This is a 2014 non-VIAS S-Works frame, I have an Aerofly bar and a Zipp SL Sprint stem. That stem is pretty fat and seems to limit how much room that rear shifter cable has to bend around the frame...right now, it binds up pretty quick and is limiting my turning, so I’m wondering what my options are (short of riding way faster and leaning hard into every turn). Would a system like Jagwire alloy housing make it easier to keep a good bend and more cable there?

I don’t do tools so I’ll hsve to get this done at a shop and I don’t like going in and disagreeing with them when they say this is as good as they can do...but I can’t be the only person with a stem like that and bars like that so there’s got to be a better way of making sure I can turn my bars enough?

TIA

A picture would help. I had some pretty short cables on mine to keep the setup as aero as possible and I didn't have steering limitations.

There is nothing special about a standard Venge to make cabling difficult.

I didn’t think there should be any issue with this bar and stem combo, am I wrong? Does it just need a longer cable, and do I even need that barrel adjuster?

Thanks guys.

Who cabled that bike? The rear derailleur cable goes in the other side. Are you running 1x so you on.y have one cable? I didn't use the barrel adjuster on mine and just relied on the adjuster on the RD

Yeah the barrel adjuster isn’t necessary, you can adjust it plenty at the rear mech. The angle seems ok coming out of the bars, the cable just isn’t long enough would be my guess.

I own the same combo, nothing you can really do, more so an issue with the bar than the stem. I think barrel adjusters are nice, you can always switch the location to the rear if you want. Finally that is how it is supposed to be routed, not sure why the guy below thinks it is incorrect.

Yes I’m running 1x on this.

Ron, you have the same bar and stem, is yours tight as well? Does it actually limit your right turning? I am just second-guessing that fat stem. I also don’t like the barrel adjuster hitting my frame so I think I’ll move/remove it.

I ran 2x on mine but it was always cabled without the cables crossing the frame.

That is the QuickStep cabled their Venges and I found this clear image as well. http://www.crankaddicts.cc/tt-season-recap-part-1/

That being said, it looks like people cable them either way.

I switched to DI2. Before i was using Da9000 with DA cables. It was very tight but i got it to work with a little extra cable. In other words i did a very wide loop and no barrel adjuster other than the one on the RD. The barrel adjuster is not really that important.

Circling back to your issue, are you saying a right turn is inhibited due to the cable binding on the stem?

Yup, my turning to the right is cut off and basically the shop said they had trouble running the cable any longer because of the tight fit with the stem. Hence I’m wondering if that’s true and if it is, do I need something like the jagwire alloy tubes to “make” it longer.

I know, shouldn’t be so difficult :/
