Dangerous Areas in Detroit? Perish the Thought!
We had a discussion earlier about the 15 most dangerous neighborhoods in the U.S. Detroit had three of them. I had some fun with the whole "Detroit: Where the Weak are Killed, Skinned and Then Eaten" notion, but the truth is I'm really not a Motown detractor.

Rather, I'm more like a realist about my old hometown than someone who says the city's having an unparalleled rebound or comeback. The truth, as always, lies somewhere in between the two opposing (Detroit Sucks! No, Detroit is Double-Plus Awesome!) camps.

However, the plain fact of the matter is there are some bad, bad neighborhoods around this town and you don't go running around them if you're not carrying some firepower, as the lady featured in the below-linked article states.

(P.S. What's funny is, the novel I'm currently writing (about 175 quality pages in the can already) is partially set in the east side of the city, where all the really interesting gun play and street violence seems to take place these days. ;-)

Coping with crime: Struggle persists in Detroit neighborhoods

"Torres and other Detroit residents bristle when they hear stories touting the city’s comeback.

Despite new amenities like the QLine and Little Caesars Arena, and the influx of well-heeled young professionals into Midtown and downtown, people who live in many Detroit neighborhoods say they are still afraid to let their children play outside.

“It’s nice to have beautiful things downtown for people to come in and see, but having a stadium or whatever isn’t going to change the mindset of people who are going around robbing and killing people,” Torres said. “It all boils down to people’s mindset.”"

PPS: Read to near the bottom of the article, where it discusses strategies that Detroit residents employ for avoiding ending up as crime victims. It's crazy.

And "looks that kill" (i.e. being killed simply for looking at someone 'the wrong way')? That's double-nuts.

At this point, I'm not sure my novel is actually fully portraying Motown as the dystopia it probably is, if this video of a daylight robbery attempt -- one in which the victim, a concealed carrier -- pulled his own piece and let the bullets fly, is any indication. Yeesh.

Hell, most of my book's action takes place at night, for various reasons central to the story. This shootout occurred in broad daylight right under the watchful lens of a surveillance camera. Makes me believe that we have enough actual monsters strolling about in the light of day, so why invent creatures of the night to play the role of proper villains? ;-)

Oh jeez, The Seatbelts play in clubs where someone outside the club the week before was either shot or carjacked. I always leave room between my car and the car ahead of me at lights. I drive through red lights in vacant areas. I never buy gas in Detroit . Liqueur stores are out of the question. The streets are like totally fucked up, if you get a blow out you drive to a safe zone on it ,,fuck the rim.
I once had a 38 pointed point blank between my eyes and another stuck in my back at the same time..it changes your perception of reality.

Scariest moment in my life was getting lost in Detroit when trying to find the bridge to Windsor. We kept getting deeper and deeper into rougher neighborhoods. Eventually we stopped and asked a local which way the bridge was. He was very polite and directed us in the right direction. My wife used to live in Windsor before we met and she always tells me about going to her favorite jazz club in Detroit where an armed escort would walk you to and from your car to the club.

While attending Univ of Michigan in early '80's a guy on our dorm hall came back with his own story of time in Detroit.: His name was Alan and he was a short nebish Jewish kid from Evanston Ill with a sort of hip woody Allen vibe. Great guy. He got lost in his Volkswagen bug in one of Detroits "better" neighborhoods on his was to a university symposium on race relations. He stopped at a convenience liqour type store to ask for directions: The kind of ghetto store where the store cashier sits behind a chain link fence. Alan walked in and asked for directions. The cashier an African American gentlemen was sitting behind the chain link fence smoking a cigarette. The cashier didn't respond. Alan then upped things by saying that he was a student at the University of MIchigan --in Ann Arbor---here to attend an academic symposium on race relations. Amazingly this did not impress the man as he got zero response from the cashier who kept smoking. Alan then pulled out his wallet and asked if there was a map he could buy...the cashier finished up his cigarette, put it between his thumb and middle finger and without ever say a word flicked it through the chain link fence at Alan. Alan: I guess I'll be going now, you have a nice store. Thank you. He never made it to the symposium and was quite upset because he needed to attend for some extra class credit (in order to pass a class)

Until they fixed it recently the way back to the bridge skirted some scary neighbourhoods and I was always scared of making a wrong turn. When I was an undergrad we had a student from Scotland (Ralph who I think came from a tough neighbourhood in Glasgow) who took the bus from London, Ontario to see the Grand Prix. When he got back and told us where he had been we were glad he made it back.

You couldn't find a 12 story suspension span with 100's of lights? Probably was the scariest moment of your life. I live 7 miles away, and can see the bridge to Windsor day or night. Anywhere near bridge, and not finding it makes your opinion of Detroit suspect.

I run in South Detroit. I bike down there. I swim in the Detroit River. I SUP in the river. I go to church under the bridge. I get a fantastic BLT&egg bagel down there. I eat it on the SW Detroit River front. Fabulous Irish music Friday nights.

I have lived in Chicago, Minneapolis, Florida, and near Rome. Have visited almost every major city in the U.S. and a few in Europe. Lotsa places with areas unappealing. Keep your head up, and pay attention to surroundings. DTW is no different.

I believe Cervelo guy. Until they recently fixed the approach even though you could see the bridge actually getting to it was a rather circuitous route.

There is no South Detroit. It's called downriver and if you live 7 miles south of the ambassador bridge you don't live in Detroit.

Yes. If you are 7 miles south of the bridge, you'd be in Canada.

Hey, man. Maybe he's just a city boy, born and raised in South Detroit? ;-)

At any rate, if you don't hold him strictly to the "south of the bridge" thing, then he's down in River Rouge or Ecorse.

Love this story. I lived or worked in Detroit for a long time. I never had real trouble with anyone but I was smart enough to not be a victim too. Sometimes that's enough.
