Free speech is what's called, in constitutional law, an unalienable right -- meaning that it's not created by the state (indeed, the state exists because the right exists and needs protecting) and it cannot be taken away by the state. It's due us as a result of our humanity and emanates from the natural law and our natural rights.
But try explaining this concept to nearly a third of college undergraduates and you're likely to be hit over the head with a brick or a baseball bat, apparently. Here's the question that was asked of these kids, as well as the breakdown by category:
As well, a disturbingly high number of college students agree with the quite-frankly-nonsensical notion that "words can be a form of violence." If you want a concise explanation for why we're being confronted with an entire generation of snowflakes that appear on the verge of a hysterical psychosis, here it is.
There is no basis in rational thought for this proposition, and it's only arisen of late because of this snowflake phenomenon, as well -- ever and always -- of the tendency among a certain segment of our society to silence any speech that opposes its agenda, which is profoundly socialistic and/or communistic. Trying to create "hate speech" exceptions to the First Amendment is a surefire path to getting rid of that most important amendment to the US Constitution.
