Online Poker

Any of you played this? Seeing the LV shooter was way into it, got me thinking...

Couldn't you use a computer program that tells you the best play for any given situation to maximize your chances of winning?

What stops people from doing this? Do you have to play in a casino with someone watching you?

A guy I ride with has a nephew who is big into online poker. Haven't asked him about such details, but I think with time you don't need anything but your own brain to make those odds. He'd play dozens of hands simultaneously. The nephew had to move out of the US once Congress cracked down on online poker a few years back. He'll do in-person tournaments in the US, but for online it's move to another country for a few months and make some dough. And plenty of dough he has made. He's only 31 and has made several million. He lost $1.7 million in one session, only to win it back in the next 24 hours. I certainly wouldn't have the stomach for that!

What's this guy's name? There are very, very few players that can claim those numbers.

To the OP, where have you read he played online poker? Only thing I have seen is video poker. Big difference.

ETA: there are several programs that help calculate odds, keep track of hands, etc which can be a huge benefit, but it won't be "solved" for quite some time. No doubt the computer science guys have taken over the online poker world and are making their way into the live scene.

You're right, I was conflating the two.

He didn’t ‘have to’ leave the US.

Not sure what you mean by this, but at his level he had no choice. Get caught VPN'ing and not only are you ostracized in the poker community, but you get banned by the sites that provide your livelihood.

Correcting your choice of words. He chose to leave the US. Nobody forced him.

Wow, do you realize how terrible your point is? I don't recall anyone saying he was forced to leave. But yes, if he wanted to continue his way of life, one that is legal in virtually every other country in the world, I guess I'll go ahead and say he was forced to leave.

Video poker and online are so far apart that the only thing in common is the word poker.

And they have programs to ferret out the guys using programs to multi table. I remember they got one guy and he said no way, so they went to his house while he played 20 tables. And you of course could play a table or two with a program, but might not be any better than just playing yourself if you are a decent player. Only way this works is to play 100’s of tables. It’s just percentage, like blackjack, you get a1% advantage and you need a lot of play to exploit it, that’s how they catch them.

Words no longer have meanings. Just say whatever you want to say and mean whatever you want to mean.

Yes, I was being a pedant. Actually, fuck it, I was being a garden hose.

Well fuck it, I'm going to be a garden hose nozzle. Was I really that unclear? Caps and parenthesis on the exact word I wanted to highlight... (-;

There have been and probably still are "bots" created for on-line poker. They are set up by programmers usually based in other countries (players from Far east countries are suspected) that play certain strategies against certain hands and action of other on-line players. Some on-line sites are better than others at rooting "bots" out and banning / closing "bot" accounts but there has been a sense that even "bots" generate action/rake that goes to profit of the on-line site. The "bots" are able to play multiple tables and if they are programmed well could make small profits that add up.

On-line poker is legal in a few states including Nevada. My recollection is that you can only play against other on-line players also residing/playing inside the same state.
