Broken Mavic Ksyrium rear axle, need replacement
Quote | Reply
This was supposed to be a relaxing Sunday afternoon wrenching in the garage!

Rear hub was buzzing and vibrating while coasting at high speed. Oh right, time to clean it and lube it. The axle nut was stuck fast. Took all my might to remove it. But then the axle nut broke while putting it back together at moderate force compared to what it took to take it apart. It was probably already damaged. Broken right where the threads begin. Tried to remove the broken piece from inside the axle but it is stuck.

I need an axle and the axle nut. See picture.

I could buy an entire hub but wouldn't feel comfortable lacing it myself. Amazon has replacement bearings, the pawls, the freehub body, the axle adaptors... pretty much everything except the axle! Weird considering they have a reputation for breaking. Ebay has all of one listing for the axle... from Greece. Yeah. No.

Any ideas? Yes I will talk to a bike shop tomorrow but they'll probably take 2 weeks and I'd need to drive there. If I find where to order this part from it'd be at my house in 2 days.

Found it! Anyone order from this site? Is this legit? The price is extraordinarily steep.

I could buy an entire new rear hub for that price and extract just the axle. But Mavic changed the Ksyrium hub design over the past 10 years, so no way to know if the axle would be the same..... This for example looks wrong:

So does this:

That site is legit. He's been selling Mavic and Campy parts for years. He could probably tell you which one you need if you send in a picture of the broken one.

Thanks. I placed the order. $55 for an axle mumble grumble. These rims are GREAT. But the Mavic hubs leave much to be desired, plus are expensive to service and have hard to find parts. If anything happens again I'll pay someone to lace a shimano hub up front and a powertap in the rear.
