On one hand, the climate is moderate, cost of living isn't too high, and I don't have to worry about hurricanes, earthquakes, forest fires, or

Are you sure about that? In 2012, 100 houses were demolished in my home town in Washtenaw county. $10M in damages. There was a F2 that went right over my house in 1990. And a F1 in 1982.
A lot of people say the Great Lakes are just as good as the ocean. They are wrong, but people say it ;)
