Learning to swim for distance and having issues with breathing and lifting head out of water too much and cause my feet to sink and drag me down. Wondering how much these will help with a new swimmer.

I do use a snorkel and have for years. Using a snorkel can help you isolate your stroke and focus on more specific movements without incorporating additional complexity like rotation and breathing. It is another tool in the swim bag and could certainly be used to help reinforce keeping your head in the water. Certainly worth a shot. I have been using the regular Finis Swim Snorkel. It is decent, but I am not married to it. I have chewed off one of the mouth guard pieces and use some zip ties to help reinforce it and keep it centered but it has been in the swim bag for years.

Great piece of equipment, use it all the time. examples: just to relax and work on floating position, kick timing, stroke symmetry, paddles, fly, or with a pool kickboard (can't get head high enough)
I got this one and I added about 3" to the top with clear tubing because overall I lay pretty low in the water.
5. ylon-a YSTA Snorkel
The ylon-a YSTA snorkel is small, lightweight and has a very minimalist design. These three features make it a very stable snorkel that seems almost nonexistent to you, while you are swimming. I like that characteristic. The snorkel comes unassembled, which is advantageous because you can size and fit it exactly to your own head. This snorkel is perfect for a stroke specialist, because of its tube size and length, its “build your own” fit and its stability while training.

Using a snorkel will do absolutely nothing to help you stop lifting your head when you breathe.

It will help you avoid it for a while, but when you go back to it, you'll still have the same old habits.

Snorkels can be good tools, but they won't help you with the head lifting.
