I'd say a marshal will push back towards where you are meant to be, but as long as you make the proper turns it should be legal.

I swim inside and AROUND the turn buoys-have never had an issue-gotta go around the red ones...

In an Open Water 70.3 swim can you swim inside the buoys except on the corners? I have been scouring the interwebs for a link but cannot find where this subject is clarifiedyou MUST go around the outside of the corner buoys. It doesnt matter which side of the other buoys you are on. sometimes the inside offers some clearer water and depending upon your favoured breathing side makes it easier to site. In a course like IMAZ being on the inside of the buoys actually gives you an advantage.

Thanks for the replies. Now I just have to worry about the flippers and swim paddles.....

It depends on the race but generally you can go to either side of the "spotter" buoys.
Some exceptions I've seen are ones that keep you off of a beach or some rocks.

If nothing else, then you'd be internet/slowtwitch famous.
Depends on the course. Some will allow it and some won't. You can always ask at the athlete briefing.
Hope this helps.
