Worth the watch.

Over the past while I've been thinking how complex the weight-equation is & had similar questions as to why. That is why there is such a variety in leanness and what drives us to respond the way we do. In my experiment to pull down to what I considered was "race weight" it wasn't easy, and I fell short of the mark.

From an engineering standpoint, our bio-systems actually work a lot like industrial effluent treatment systems. There are primary, secondary and tertiary treatment stages. The enviro engineers I talked to were always concerned about the livelihood of their bugs in the process. Carbs jack the primary system but leave little for the health of the tertiary system - an engineering no-no.

So drinking water straight up from Sproat Lake is a good thing. (It's tested yearly & residents have been doing this since settling here). And cucumber chips from the garden with hummus, my latest mix-up is another good thing. A donut from the 49th Cafe w/ latte after a morning swim in Kits, not so much :(

Link doesn't work for those outside of Canada. Any chance you can post the title/author so we can search and hopefully find it elsewhere? Thank you.

This a CBC series called "The Nature if Things."

The director is Leora Eisen and author is Tim Spector.

Here's a link to the episode's page. There's a link there to a CBC radio interview. Not sure that it will work outside if Canada.

Quick summary of the program from memory. Gut scientists are studying how body weight is associated with the bio-diversity of the intestines.

They study people who are obese, twins who are lean, twins who are one lean, one a little heavier. Tribes in Africa who are all lean body types.

Lab mice experiment where one group of mice is fed fats only, and one fats and chick peas. The chick pea group is significantly less weight.

One researcher puts his son on 2 week junk food diet (McD's) and documents how his microbe-health plummets.

Also they discuss the dramatic drop in fiber and use of antibiotics as the culprits to the reduced microbiotic diversity found in current people USA/Canada.

Mention that natural or "dirty" things are lead to improvements, such as living with dogs or consuming local and natural fruits and veggies.
