QB Ocean Race 2017: All that swim crap (almost) paid off
Quote | Reply
I set out in defense of the "Open" wet suit class cup in this race. Doing an inverted Lionel I swam as much as my backsides would allow July to race date. I posted some things I was working on during that process.

Race day was beautiful. Tide was out, course was on the sand when we came to register for the free race. Tide rolled in, course floated up and the water was clear. With a tide coming in that fast comes a stiff current though and some chop.

Siren went off and race was on. My neighbour Dr. Owen Brown and a "ringer" in a Roka suit took off like gangbusters. Pace was torrid. I stayed w/lead group around the first turn and into the current. At that point I thought I'd better dial-it back or I could end up in the Coast Guard boat on the defibrillator. Does anyone else have these thoughts?

I don't have any issues on the bike, I can push push push. But in the water and running things seem a bit different. Coming up to the ~ 800M turn' round, I was in no-mans land again & about 75M back, which was awesome. At this point I could cut the damn course and be back on their feet, Canadian style. Just to get the tow home of course, I'm not out-sprinting these dudes. Good thing I didn't there were two course marshals waiting :P

Return leg just kept "tempo" make sure I didn't blow up (ie cramping) and enjoyed what was a gorgeous day on the ocean. This race is so worth it. Swimmers come year after year.

B70 Helix was butter, Hammer gels A1 and my stroke was churning it up. Just didn't have the lungs, dang!

Nice video feature of the Ocean Mile race at this link under "latest"

That lead group was my neighbour Owen, a 12 & 13 year old from the swim club and Trevor (career OW swimmer) in the wetsuit. Some good footage of those guys.

I slotted in behind those guys (5th). I need to find ~30 seconds per OW 400M to be able to compete with the front swimmers (and that applies to OW races around here). My "coach" doesn't think that is possible in my lifetime :). I actually think it is, but improbable and my technique would have to be 99.9%.

While I'd love to try, just don't think it's worth it, in a tri context.
