Shimano XC7 shoes, size 40 Special order from the shop = no return.
These run large, easily accommodate a foot that's 10" long. Perhaps a 39.5 in these would have worked but I'm heading back to my old favorites for now. The new soles of these are amazing. Dual direction dial upper closure.

Never ridden with the stock insoles, have had Shimano SPD cleats affixed for three short road rides while sorting things out.
