You need to clean all the petroleum crap off the chain before applying wax lubes. Otherwise you just get black road dirt goo balls.

Just get the Molten Speed wax and follow their cleaning instructions. I clean and wax the chain, use for a couple hundered miles and then switch over to Squirt. No more little grease turds on the carpet.

on what and how are you getting grease on everything from your bike? I store my bike indoors in a room with a cream carpet with no problems

I have no idea but it's everywhere! In need to do a better job of cleaning my bike after wet/muggy rides, but even when I do clean it there is still some grease. I ride a lot indoors too and I'm not sure if the trainer is responsible for distributing the grease.

I love this stuff. The only downside is having to lube much more often.

It's so amazing for gravel riding. Dry dusty conditions gunk up oil based lubricants way too fast. This stuff just keeps running smooth.

Take the chain off and soak it in some sort of degreaser. Take the opportunity to degrease the chainrings, the cassette, and the RD.

Put the chain back on and use Rock N Roll Gold from then on. Done.

Also make sure the BB or hubs or pedal spindles aren't oozing grease. They should not unless excess grease was used.

Exactly this. Start with a nice, clean drivetrain. Add a quality chain lube (not grease). Wipe off the excess. Your right leg witll probably end up a lot cleaner, too.

Also, if you do get grease on stuff, use dish soap and paper towels to get rid of it. That includes your greasy hands after working on the bike. Damp paper towels with a few drops of dish soap on them are like anti grease magic.

Even with standard teflon or other non-wax lubes, I've never had an issue with gunked up chains. I always lube every ride or 2, 1 drop on each link, and then wipe the chain clean. I also periodically pour a few drops of lube on a rag and use that to wipe down the outside of the chain. End result is that my chains look almost new right up until they need to be replaced...

How much are you talking about and where? if it is the chain I have a rag in a bag that i squirt a little chain lube and run the chain through after every other or so. Maybe you are piling too much lube on?

Same with me. I have been using Squirt lube for a month or so on two completely degreased chains. I don't see much of a difference from oil based lube. I was hoping it would be cleaner as I transfer my bike a lot from the trainer to outdoors. No such luck.

I wax my chain and... no grease or marks at all.

First, Rock N Roll Gold is a great lube, but it attracts dirt as much as anything. It won't help at all.

+1 on all the wax suggestions. Clean your chain and drivetrain really well with a degreaser and then use wax -- melted wax like Molten speed wax will keep very clean. Squirt isn't too bad, but not as clean as melted wax. I actually use melted wax on a new chain and then mostly Squirt in between because it's faster/easier. You can additionally wipe down the chain gently/quickly when you get home and it should stay very clean.

A long shot but worth taking a look at. Are you using a trainer tire? Regular tires used on the trainer will often throw off rubber "dust" in fine particles that can easily get tracked around and end up looking just like grease stains. (Actually, the rubber is a petroleum product so it kind of is a grease stain).

No matter how dirty a bike is, unless it is literally dripping wet, it will not stain a floor. While mud and dirt might fall off the frame, it is highly unusual for a chain to "drip" no matter how nasty it is. The grease will easily transfer to anything that touches it but it does not just fall off.

Seriously, it IS all that. You will be shocked how amazingly clean you bike, hands, and workspace become, and you will completely ditch your degreaser (gasp)

My chains gets pretty dirty and usually after every other ride I use white lightning chain cleaner on a scotts blue shop paper towel. It works great on removing the grease and cleaning your rear cassette. They look new when Im done cleaning them and will follow it up with a chain lube once it is clean.

I converted to Paraffin wax this year. The difference in cleanliness is night and day. This is the answer, and likely the only answer, if you want to keep your wife happy.

A cheap slowcooker is $10 at walmart. The smallest size should do just fine.

Wax blocks, or cheap candles are pretty easy to source. I'd start with what's lying around the house.

Pro-tip: Don't use the wife's scented candles. She'll be pissed... again;)

Wax is the answer.
