More reasons USAT is failing us

They are listed as a partner/sanctioned for this race, yet the race has no permitting and a cease and desist from the location where it is supposed to take place.

Excuse me for being mistaken, but shouldn't they be looking out for its membership? This is a perfect example why there is no value, at least to me, for a USAT in its current form.

I'm no USAT apologist, but I have no idea why you think they have any culpability in this matter.

What can USAT do here? Draft a stern letter to the resort or the local government? That won't do anything. Or draft a stern letter to the RD? Maybe pull their USAT certification? They may actually do the latter, but only if this persists for a few years. Personally I wouldn't want them strong-arming RDs like that.

I don't believe for a second the assumptions made by that resort in the letter posted. RD probably had every intention of running a tri there. They just didn't get the permitting on time, and are probably still holding out hope that they will get them before race day.

This RD has a pretty mixed history with races failing and venue issues. it's become a pattern that probably shouldn't be ignored

Of bigger concern would be this quote from one of the links in regards to their cancelled Brooklyn race.

"Caress said Pacific Sports will refund all or a portion of registration fees, something the company is still working out. But he estimates the California company has lost $100,000 by cancelling the race."

I'm assuming that's $100,000 in lost revenue? Not $100,000 'net' loss from already accrued expenses?
'Cause if so, I'd be more concerned that they were taking a $100,000 net hit by cancelling the race as opposed to holding the race, paying the $126,000 and only potentially losing $26k...or less...if they could find a way to make some of that up.

They are sanctioning a race with no plans or permits... I would hope that prior approval would be required. That they approve this race as our governing body makes me think the race is legit. Maybe that's just me.

Did USAT actually sanction the race or did the producer simply claim they were sanctioned?

They're not underwriting the race. They're saying.....if the race happens, it'll be conducted under USAT rules.

Let's not try to get facts. :)
