Sports hernia/AP - any new stories or updates?
I posted a comment on a thread on this last year, and was wondering if anyone has had any recent surgeries with Dr Meyer or Brown or non-surgical success with eg PT.

I've had an unconfirmed diagnosis of sports hernia for more than a year. I was able to get through Boston in April but I knew it would be a death march for my groin. I could feel the burn the whole time and though I finished, I wasn't wrong and haven't been able to run more than 2 steps since. I have been able to bike and elliptical relatively pain free but even walking is tight. After 3 months off there is zero improvement.

After two unrelated surgeries this year I am in no hurry to get back under the knife, especially for an uninsured "exploratory" surgery. So two questions:

1) Any recent updates on folks with this injury or one like it (eg lower ab pain -- below the belly button and pubic area), who have had surgical or good PT/ART/PRP experiences?

2) If so, what kind of orthopedic or PT did you go to? All I can find are "hip" specialists, and no PT I have called has ever heard of a sports hernia.

Thanks for any info

I saw Dr. Brown in February because I had a number of the symptoms. First, Dr. Brown is fantastic. I went in and he did a ton of feeling around on my muscles and diagnosed me with 2 tears; 1 on my adductor longus and 1 on my external oblique. The oblique is non-symptomatic so we decided to do nothing for it. The adductor was different. I'd already done a ton of conservative treatment so Dr. Brown first injected it with lidocaine and had me run around the block. It was the first pain free running I'd had in 13 months. This was just to confirm that the oblique wasn't causing pain and that the adductor was the only source. He also injected me with a steroid and told me to take it easy for about a week. Man was I sore after that injection as it was basically right into the tear which was where the muscle turns into tendon (or whatever the right way to say it is).

This injection seems to have solved it, I'm working on 5 months pain free and have been able to bust out a 100 mile week running and have been able to push hard on the bike in the big ring which I wasn't able to do before. No real pain to speak of though it's definitely still rebuilding strength.

If it hadn't worked he would have recommended surgery to fix it, and that still might be an option if it regresses.

Thanks that's really helpful. I actually spoke to Dr Brown last year and just based on the description and a negative MRI he was thinking it was Osteitis Pubis (but pretty sure it's not). I'm on the opposite coast but in the SF area enough to go see him. That's probably my best next move.
