For those 1x folks racing Chattanooga 70.3 WC's... gearing?

Course as found on Strava (link)

that "St Elmo to Methodist church" segment is legit: 3.2 miles at 6% with the first 1.6 miles of that at 8%.

I'm thinking 50 x 11-36 to cope with that race day. Anyone else given thought to their 1x gearing choice?

On a ride last week, I thought about this climb when going up a climb out my back door while running my 50 x 11-32: https://www.strava.com/...2/analysis/3954/4638

When the grade broke 8%, I was really mashing and that's just not going to work race day, especially with the grade in Chattanooga breaking 8, 9 and even 10% at times for good little stretches.

honestly, though, I'd kind of like to just replace my 32 with a 34 so I can keep my 14t cog.

I literally ordered a 11-36 about 15 minutes before reading this thread. I run 52t x 11-32 and dont necessarily feel comfortable with the 32 at that grade either, at least not in a race. I'm living in a pretty hilly area right now so once the 11-36 arrives I'm going to ride it for awhile and see if its worth it.

nice. I definitely wouldn't be able to push a 52x32 up an 8% sustained climb without some serious mashing/low-cadence, but I do think a 52 x 11-36 would be better than my 50 x 11-36. I'm using direct mount right now, and Absolute Black (link) has listed a 52t & 54t TT ring as 'coming soon' for a little while now. When the 52t comes available, I may go for that, seeing how I max out on some descents I'd prefer to pedal down with the 50x11.

I think 50x34 would be about perfect, but 52x36 is pretty darn close to that.

some quick numbers:

some more thinking. I'm switching to 162.5mm crankarms in the coming weeks. So, switching from gear inches to gain ratios, which take into account crank arm length:

So, going to 162.5 from 172.5 crank length will give me the equivalent of the 50x34 I was wanting with the 50x36. And, not shown, the 50x11 changes from 8.8 to 9.4 going to the shorter crank length (52x11 at 172.5 is 9.2 gain ratio). So, that means the 11-32 will get more difficult with the 162.5, making the 11-36 that much more needed.
