My lbs just have the tool to update the 2nd gen, for the old one there was another one which was more expensive and got no clue who has one.
But seriously I don't think shimano will put .1 cent of work in that one if they even remember it still exists.
The first gen Dura Ace 7970 Di2 cannot be updated in any way. The system checker used by shops was only for checking the component condition. The individual components are "dumb".
Most 2nd plus gen Di2 with e-tube components have a built-in chip that allows for firmware updates. Now that there are 10 and 11 speed derailleur versions, internal/external batteries and various Junction A boxes/handlebar displays, and D-Fly wireless modules, things are getting more confusing.
The firmware can be updated using using e-tube project software with the internal battery charger, or using the e-tube diagnostics unit and now also using the e-tube Bluetooth LE app.
The BLE app only works if you have a new BLE enabled internal battery, or BLE enabled external battery mount, plus one of the two new D-Fly modules.
The 3 shift modes mentioned in the article above are available with Synchro-shifting. Synchro shift also requires a new BLE battery in the system.
I had not seen the FD micro adjust info before. I've never had the need for it, but I'll try it out on both the non-BLE and BLE Di2 systems and see if it works for both.
