Hawaii - return trip
Hey all,

We were planning a trip to England, but a trip to Hawaii just landed in our laps. My brother-in-law has a time share that we can use for a week. The problem is, I've already been to Hawaii, its on the big island and I've already been there, and I didn't find the big island to be exceptionally interesting.

So, what can I do to make the most out of a return to Hawaii? How easy/expensive would it be to island hop? I'd like to do Pearl Harbor and Kawaii.

Guess It depends on what you did last time and what you like doing.

Volcanoes, snorkeling, beach time, Mauna Kea summit for sunset, north side.

Tons of stuff to do.

Every island has amazing things to do and see. Would depend on your willingness to stay over or just do a day trip.

If you're not that into it, it's a long way to go...give it to someone else?

Seriously?

Well help me out. Obviously I missed something.

If memory serves me correctly, we did the volcano, which was cool (though there was no visible lava).
There was a really cool beach on the north/west side that you had to walk down to with cliffs on both sides.
We snorkeled on the south/east side, and that was amazing.

Give me some tips.

Manta ray dive or snorkel is awesome.

Hike to the green sand beach.

We snorkeled more than once where we were joined by a pod of dolphins.

Watching the lava flow was cool.

I've been to Maui, Kauai and the big island. Personally the big island is my favorite- but that differs by person.

what do you like to do whilst on vacation? Kaui (sic) is awesome greener than other islands. Boat trip along sea cliffs is nice. North side is stunningly beautiful. Surfing there is great mellow enough for amateurs like me at least at some spots. Molokai has some interesting history and is very laid back. Maui was my least fav not been to big island or Oahu.

Generally speaking, experience things that I can't do elsewhere. I'm not a "sit on the beach all day" kind of guy.

Highly recommend Kauai. Kayak up the Wailua river / Hike to waterfalls, sunset cruise along Nepali Coast, hike at Ke'e beach on the very far north end, Waimea Canyon, helicopter tour (it's the only way to see some parts of the island and obviously snorkeling and surfing (waves are bigger on the north end). south side of the island is the sunny side (poipu beach).

Either fly through Oahu on the way there or back with a 1 or 2 day layover so that you can take in Pearl. As far as the Big Island goes, been there 2x now and we know we're going to return with the goal of focusing on a specific area. Likely the on the south or north west side of the island and try and drill down to the local level a little more. IE. stay away from the touristy area's and try to experience the island life a bit more like locals do.

Seriously?

I'm with Duffy. I love the big island. Just spent a week and a half there.

I'd pick that over Oahu every time.

That's the thing. Hawaii is the least "sit on the beach all day" island. IMO, the beaches on the big island kind of suck (with some exceptions). Most of them are a rocky mess that will leave you bloody and battered.

YES. And Hanalei bay. On the East side there is a nice snorkeling spot that was created many years ago that is enclosed by very large boulders so kids could learn to swim safely. On Molokai you can go down the big sea cliff to the former leper colony. There is a very cool valley on east side, I think you will need a guide. The key will likely be coordinating the hop from island to island.

Pelagic Magic night dive!!!! I cannot wait until I make it back to Hawaii and Kona to make that dive! That and do the manta ray night dive again. Incredible. I'd also like to get to north shore area for some hiking around Kohala. Would like to hike the volcanoes much more than we did. Four days is way too short.

LAVA!! Kilauea is flowing like mad into the sea. I missed seeing the lava when we were on the Big Island in August (pregnant and wasn't allowed on the boat tours nor could do the long hot hike). My husband, mom and 7 & 5 year old did a boat tour. They still talk about seeing it.

And all that stuff everyone else has said. We had a blast on the big island. Scuba, snorkeling, hiking. Best sandy beach was Hapuna. Was like being on a different island after all the volcanic beaches and shorelines.
