Home bike mechanics help: removing crank
My roadbike has a pinarello tank fp crank.

(Link to same crank attached http://www.bikenow.us/...-bb-sale-256473.html)

What type of crank is this? I.e. How do I remove it to replace?

I'm getting a PM and want to remove this myself but don't want to start wrenching and break something before I know what I'm doing. As far as I've gotten is to remove the "Dust cap"? on the non-drive side.

Where to from here?

Tried looking at youtube videos and I'm not sure which crankset type I have.

In the pic, looks like the non-drive side crankarm has an allen bolt in it?
I'm guessing you just need an 8mm allen wrench, use it on the non-drive side to remove the arm. Same way you'd remove an SRAM GXP crank.

What SBRcoffee said, except that it is probably a 10mm Allen bolt. You loosen the bolt normally (counter-clockwise). It will back out a little and feel loose until it hits the built-in extractor cap and feels tight again. Keep turning, and it will push the crank arm off the spindle.

Its a MegaExo type bottom bracket. A tutorial for any crank with the same bottom bracket type should do.

Looks like a wavy washer type MegaExo.

Just back the bolt out 'till it hits the self extractor and keep turning.

What you do need is a torque wrench to tighten it back up to spec. I broke one of those bolts before and it's not fun finding a new one.

Hmmm. Thanks. Think I've removed that non-drive side bolt before and it didnt self extract the crank arm? Will have another look and also make sure to use a torque wrench.

There should be a little cap with a hole in the middle that screws into the crank arm. The crank bolt pushes against that cap to extract the arm. If you removed the cap, then the bolt will just come out and not self-extract.

Tighten it back up to spec without breaking it?

You aren't going to break it.

You haven't seen me in a workshop. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Ok I think I've worked out my problem. I don't have that "end cap" which the crank bolt pushes against to self extract.

Options? Just try to buy a spare? I bought the bike second hand and it's never had that outer ring.

Your link up top doesn't work any more, can you post another link to exactly what crank you have?

There is a bike store near me that does online ordering that has many small obscure parts.

treefortbikes.com

I found some under crank parts but don't remember exactly what you had.

You could try one of these: http://www.parktool.com/...-taper-cranks-ccp-22

I am not 100% sure if a crank puller would work with your self-extracting crank, but it seems like it would.

Found a new link. Definitely missing the outer cap I think

Thanks. I think key would just be to make sure I match the diameter and thread...i.e. so the crank puller threads into the crank arm properly.

I have a crank puller at home, but it is too small. I'll look around to see if I can find an alternative / otherwise its off to the LBS (last resort)

I had the same issue with my bike, where the self-extracter caps hadn't been put back on after assembly. I ended up using this crank puller to get them off.

Could be either of these:

http://www.treefortbikes.com/...Self-Extracting.html

http://www.treefortbikes.com/...Self-Extracting.html

Or maybe another.

Can you read any markings on the crank bolt itself?

The Crank bolts itself is an M-17 bolt (size I mean). It interestingly also lists the torque specs in kgf-cm (450 - 550)

I think the internal thread size is 26mm on the crank arm - so either I measured wrong and its the Alloy Self Extracting QR-17 Bolt, for 24mm Alloy Cranks or its another. (My cranks are carbon...dont know if this matters)?

I think you have an a rebranded fsa slk light crank.

This is what I have and the bolt is the M17. Does the markings match yours?

M17 on one side and 45-55Nm on the other

Hi All,

Thanks very much for the help - managed to get the missing "cap" from a local bike shop.

Will be attempting to remove cranks and replace this weekend. Thanks again for everyones help here.

PS lookout for my next thread on how to correctly install chainrings on a Rotor 2INPower MAS crank

Remove pretension cap (looks like yours was missing?)

Loosen allen bolt holding non-drive side crankarm

Pull non-driveside crankarm off.

Pull the crankset out of the BB.

To reassemble: insert crankset back into BB, mount crankarm on, tighten pretension cap to about 2 Nm, then tighten the allen bolt on the crankarm.
