I am noticing that many times during the day I have stopped breathing. I don't know for how long it lasts but I can tell because I have to take a deep breath that it is a bit. Any idea on why this happens?

hm feels like you probably should go see a doctor and not post on a triathlon forum.

That will be a while. I am learning to be a self doctoring dude. I am embracing the stupidity of "Idiot heal thyself!"

Did it happen when you tried to spell breathe?

Turn head to sideways, take breath, resume swimming, repeat.

Maybe the solution is to stop remembering...

Not sure the reasoning, but I'll hold my breath for 30 to 40 seconds at a time and then realize I'm not breathing. Bugs the heck out of my wife. I do know it isn't healthy. I also knew I likely had sleep apnea for years and only recently got officially diagnosed and on a CPAP.

As someone who also has periods of doing this, this is really useful. Thanks.
I don't think this is unusual. It has often happened to me too.
I hadn't realised until I saw your post that it hasn't happened to me recently. It was happening regularly a few months ago. I was checked for sleep apnea last year (I have mild sleep apnea, no intervention needed) and I mentioned this to the doctor, a respiratory specialist. He said it happens and isn't something I need to worry about.
I've never noticed this happen when I'm exerting myself. I think it's only happened when I'm relaxing and my breathing rate is very slow. Especially when I'm aware of my breathing, paradoxically.
