The news is saying "It attacked" but it looks like the sea lion was looking for the food she had in her hand just the moment before.

The news also interviewed a marine biologist who said that 1) the sea lion likely thought the girl's dress was fish or some kind of food and 2) animals that are habituated to humans can get aggressive when people stop feeding them. it had been given several pieces of bread and expected more so it went for what looked like food.

Yup. Weather.com has a gif of the moment the sea lion pops out of the water & grabs the girl. I can't stop watching it and laughing. I'd feel completely different if it were my daughter or if the girl weren't OK, but she was fine physically so I'll sit here and be the ass who repeatedly laughs at the gif.
