Study Looks at News Coverage in Trump's First 100 Days
Quote | Reply
Here are results from a study of news coverage in Trump's first 100 days. New high in negative coverage for any president (I think well deserved). There are a couple of nice charts that show Trump relative to the last few POTUS's (indicates the fawning press Obama received), and one that rates eight US outlets and three European. I was glad to see WSJ and BBC about where I'd think things should be. Most others about what one would expect knowing their bias. Worth a look.

Thanks for sharing. Definitely worth a look. And I agree with your preamble for the most part

The volume of negative news is easy to explain and is warranted. Even Republicans are using the word "impeachment." Barely 100 days in and it's a shitshow like none other.

Trump declared war on the media. Do you expect any different?

He wants to take them down and they want to take him down.

Objective? Hardly.

So what they're saying is if you want less negative news about Trump then go to Fox, but even they can also be negative.

Bingo.

Add to that he pissed everyone off in Washington: dems are sore because they bet on Clinton and lost; pubs are sore because he called them all and their candidates; agencies are sore because at some point he called them useless.

He doesn't help himself, but it's difficult not to see the continual drip feed of leaks and anonymous sources which are taken up by the media, who then cite themselves as proof of misdeeds.

Trump is a godsend to the media, but the question is what happens if they win and he leaves the presidency before his term is up. Is this the way it's going to run for the next president?

He sure makes for entertaining news.

Nah. Remember Trump is Rob Ford. Ford declared war on the media. They were nasty as anything towards him. Well Ford is gone and the media is fairly kind to the current (slightly) right leaning mayor.

Are you saying the leaks are just the media making up stories and then quoting themselves?

Maybe you should re-read the post: media sent anonymous leaks, transmits them unquestioned, picked up smaller media, modified then transmits, using original media as source.

Example of how it plays out in a different by similar way

Large news media creates headline (Reuters: Trump team had 18 undisclosed contacts with Russians) but buries the rest of the story (source said there was no evidence of wrong doing or collusion between the campaign and the Russians) within the body of the piece;
Small news media (eg Vox) picks up the headline alone (18 contacts), ignores the rest (no wrongdoing) and runs it, citing Reuters article as evidence.

Headline gets magnified, facts of the story fade away unless the reader can be bothered reading the original, cited, piece.

Swim. Overbike. Walk.

I suspect that if Trump found a cure for testicular cancer, the headlines the next day would be: Sexist Trump Leaves Women With Breast Cancer to Die!

Nah. Remember Trump is Rob Ford. Ford declared war on the media. They were nasty as anything towards him. Well Ford is gone and the media is fairly kind to the current (slightly) right leaning mayor.

But politicians like Rob Ford, Trump and others of the same ilk, don't really help themselves, with all the other stuff they do. Long before he was Mayor, Rob Ford said and did things that were, wrong, dishonest, untruthful, irresponsible, and inappropriate. When your entire behavior pattern and personality is based on unpredictability, unreliability and saying one thing and doing something else - any sane person is going to call you out on that - and that's what the media tends to do.

AS for Trump - When you go on and on and on, about the then President golfing so much, and then you in the first 100 days of your presidency, go golfing more than he did in 4 years . . . . well . . you are kind of setting yourself up to be called out! When one week you are calling the New York Times a "Gem of journalism", and then other weeks you are calling them "scumbags", "liars" and "perpetrators of fake news" . . . how do you think the media is going to react to all of these 180 degree switches? And how ridiculous you look with all the flip-flops in position?
