The USA Swimming Open Water Nationals for the 10k is today (Friday). The men's 10k swim starts at 11am PT and the women's 10k starts at 1:30pm PT. The race is at Castaic Lake in Southern California. Some of the best Open Water swimmers in the world are competing. There'll be a live stream of the event and you can find it at usaswimming.org. I'm out at the event, so if anyone has any questions, please let me know. I'll post pictures/videos of the race on my Instagram page (http://www.instagram.com/magnoliamasters)

How are these athletes built? I mean, are they super lean and toned like pool swimming olympians, or are they a little rounder to deal with the colder water and longer event?

Any run that doesn't include pooping in someone's front yard is a win.

I've met Lexie Kelley, who may or may not be racing (didn't look at the start list). That woman has some serious arm muscle.

maybe she's born with it, maybe it's chlorine
If you're injured and need some sympathy, PM me and I'm very happy to write back.

All of them come from pool swimming backgrounds. There are a lot of college and post collegiate swimmers racing.

I have to confess I have not followed pro OW swimming very close lately, what are the stats on this gal Ashley T?

Funny I logged on and recognized the voice of the boat announcer, used to swim with him in San Clemente. Mike Lewis who is a very good masters swimmer himself, and his wife is a multiple(many many times) national champion in lots of events. Cynthia Lewis, great couple..

Looks like 92 strokes per minute for the lead women, and that is her causing pace, will try and count once she smells the barn.

Just counted the gal leading the chase pack 100+ SPM. Looks like the urgency to position for 2nd is happening well from the finish.

The men's tempo was a lot slower. They were mostly in the 1.7-1.8 range so around 65-70spm.

Saw one of old Bill Rose's swimmers won Jr men 5k. Bill coached my coach at CDSC in the 70s.
