I have seen a lot of good posts about the IMSR 70.3 Race and feedback on the course - has anybody previewed the second half of the course where we do 2 loops for the full that can comment? - seems pretty flat and fast.

It's a nightmare of traffic, big box stores, and major road crossings. I live here and haven't ridden those roads in 15+ years due to safety concerns (and lousy scenery). Hopefully the race will do a good job with traffic control. It should be flat and fairly fast, though with some annoying turns in Rohnert Park at the far end of the loop.

I rode it last weekend. The first 65 miles of the course are awesome. Like the above poster said, the loop section is flat and suburban/strip mall sprawl. The cyclists had their own lane over the weekend heading into town, and it was very very well controlled, so I'm not concerned about the traffic (except the massive community complaints that will follow)

To re-iterate and add
The "loop" section is in one word ... FLAT (OK one gentle roller and one bridge per loop) but it does not get any flatter. I would strongly advise against pre-riding as most of roads are not bike friendly for training and not worth the risk (as JAM said above, we just don't ride those roads here locally) ... on race day you will have traffic control etc so won't be an issue. When you are here pre race it is worth driving to see the turns and road surface.
In the summer on "typical" days we have a wind that builds out of the south / southwest across the day.
Enjoy your training

yeah, I would not have ridden it had I known it was that vastly different traffic wise from the rest of course. Agree that there is no need to, just drive it.

The recent course change adds a 4.4 mi. out and back on Mark West Station Rd. (Mi. 50) there is about 200' of climbing including the short steep climb that was a part of the old Vineman run course. The pavement here is brutal. Potholes, patches and rough pavement. This section will suck your will to live if you're not mentally prepared for it.

Nobody in our house uses it, including the 2 teenagers, and they're on their devices quite a bit.

There has been some recent paving and patching on this section. Still some bumpy areas but not as bad as it was when I posted my earlier comment. I recommend driving or pre-riding this part of the course.

I'm starting to make my packing list and wondering about bringing tinted goggles and a swim skin. Thanks in advance for any insight!

Two secenarios
1) If we have a marine layer morning sun is a non issue
2) Sun rising in the east ... the first line of buoys will track east / northeast ... so there will be glare at a certain level on that section to start lap 1 and lap 2 but sun will be above the horizon and you should not be swimming directly into it
Other than that short segment, sun will be a non issue
