FAILED! A Power Meter That Won't Drop Fenix 5 Connection
Quote | Reply
Ok. So it works the other way around. I have the Fenix 5S and I want to get a power meter that will connect to the Fenix 5S - while it is on my wrist, without dropping the connection, and without a bunch of hacks.

I know that Stages is a no-go. Been there, done that. I could get my 920xt to hold enough of a connection to make it okay, but the Fenix 5S connection lasts about 3 seconds and then it drops.

I don't want to get a different data device (such as the Edge). My husband will just pinch it from me.

I've eyeballed the Vector pedals (both are Garmin - should work, right?). Not convinced yet.

Anybody have a success story with Fenix 5S having a solid connection with a power meter? Do tell!

Not sure if this helps, but my Fenix 3 connects flawlessly to both my Quarq Riken and my Powertap hub. No dropouts that I've detected in 2+ years.

Powertap P1 Pedals have never dropped signal to my Fenix 3 on my wrist. Fenix 5 should be no different.

Not to mention, the P1s are the most convenient power meter I've ever used--swap bikes in 30 seconds, find batteries at ANY gas station on a ride, hold charge for loooong time, easy to calibrate.

WHOA! Another CPA out there. Hello fellow CPA from California. Tax? Assurance? Advisory? Other?

I was eyeballing the Powertap P1 pedals this morning....

Check out the classifieds! Someone has a BNIB set for $950. That's an incredible deal.

And I'm 100% audit/attest in the midwest (late summer/fall busy season)--so I had all winter/spring to train hard and I'm finally ready to get out and race!

Happy training!

Nice! Thanks for the tip. Just checked out classifieds.

GAAP <shudder> I'm Tax/Advisory. Almost all the numbers I deal with are made up (forecasting, planning, etc.). Way easier than ticking and tying. But your workpapers are beautiful! ;-)

I have PowerTap C1 and get the drop-outs on my 920xt [especially when I have it on my wrist], never on my Edge 510.

I've had no connection issues with my fenix 5 and Garmin Vector 2 pedals. No idea about the 5s but I'd assume it's the same.

My wife is waiting for her 5s to arrive. If I have a chance I'll try the vectors out with it.

I'm having issues with the Original vectors and the Fenix 5. To calibrate I have to hold the watch at top tube or lower and I get a lot of missed data during rides when compared to edge 1000 and edge 820 on the same ride. I never had these problems with 920 or 735.

If there is some trick that has worked for other folks I would love to hear it. I've resorted to double sourcing data on an Edge for now.

I'd poke Garmin support on this specific combo, specifically Vector support.

I think there were some very early Vector changes that may help your situation, so they may be able to sort something out for you...

I had issues with the Fenix 5x dropping connection with a Rotor Dual Power while on the trainer. I also had a PC8 and a windows tablet with TrainerRoad going, so I knew the power meter was fine, but if I extended the Fenix 5x on my wrist into the aerobars it would lose connection to the power meter very often - like every one or two seconds. If I placed the power meter next to me, closer to the power meter and not on my wrist, the connection was reliable.

I think this was remedied, or is significantly improved in one of the beta firmware updates (probably since 3.22, now on 3.30) as I've taken it on the road and haven't seen significant dropouts. My last outdoor ride I had maybe 2 zeroes in an hour but I could have genuinely stopped pedaling for those readings.

I'd suggest trying to update the firmware if you haven't done so yet.

Okay. So I got Powertap P1 pedals, stuck them on my bike, took it out for a rush-hour spin and nailed an amazing average of 6 watts over 40 minutes.

Is it me??? What am I doing wrong?

I used to have 920xt + Stages PowerMeter = FAIL

Pretty much all of these threads sum up my Stages experience.

http://forum.slowtwitch.com/...ges%20920xt#p5507965

So, I went Powertap P1. Did I just waste another $1k on technology that won't work with Garmin?

Anybody have P1 + Fenix 5 = success? How are you doing it?

I use the P1 and the fenix 5 when I travel. When I'm at home I just use my 520 as I prefer to have it right in front of me. Haven't had any issues at all (with the powermeter that is... me on the other hand, UGH!).

Following as I have a Fenix 5 and quarq riken that pair up fine, but the power and cadence data are way off. I've done the calibration and zeroed out the meter, but no luck. The Edge 810 (and previous 920) reads the data great, so it's not the PM. Thinking this will be a call to Garmin next week as I'm not finding much out there on this right now.

That chart actually doesn't look like a bad connection. It looks like a bad battery.

Bad connection charts usually have constant drops (meaning, power is present and then not present). While I know the batteries are new in theory - try swapping them out.

Also - double-check you don't have conflicting crank length settings, as that can also result in exactly what the chart shows (i.e. two devices connected to it at once with different crank length settings).

My Fenix 5s connects flawlessly with me Vector2 pedals. The only time they start to act up is after I get the notifications that the battery is low. I usually try to ride a time or two more after the notification, so I have no one to blame but myself. Otherwise, they have worked great for me.
