Swim Heart Rate Monitor
Does anyone have experience with a heart rate monitor that works well while swimming? I don't care much about the accuracy while I am stroking but I would like to have an accurate measurement quickly once I've reached the wall (within a few seconds).

The Mio Alpha seems to be able to provide this but I'm concerned with the durability for daily swimming. A Polar HRM would transmit well but I've heard the strap will fall off when kicking off the wall. I don't want to spend much (no Garmin 920xt), and all I care about is real-time reading.

Thanks for the input!

Possibly the Apple Watch. Apple claims it captures HR while swimming. The touch screen can be tricky while wet, but if you have a main screen with HR, that should be a decent reading while between intervals. The downside to the AW is that the data are locked in Apple's ecosystem. But if your main interest is real-time HR readings, then it might be the ticket.

I have the Garmin 235, with the direct wrist HR measurement. It doesn't have a swim mode (would need the 735), but if I put it in the "Other" mode, it has worked well for checking out HR between intervals in the pool. I've used it the last 4 months in the pool with no issues.

This is in the "Garmin Sucks" category. We get it... HRM may not be ideal in a pool. However, let the decision be up to us. In my case, I would be thrilled to see real-time HR on the screen when between intervals. Instead, Garmin disables the sensor entirely and forces us to use their swim HRM product, which I do not like.

The Suunto Spartan Wrist HR does it in swim mode. Works pretty well. Here's a graph from this morning's swim. http://www.movescount.com/moves/move155743826

You can see the dip at 5 minutes in where I had to fiddle with a drag chute to untangle it. And then a few peaks where it wasn't positioned perfectly. But I just look at it while swimming and adjust it on my wrist if it's getting weird.

Polar HRMs, even older ones did great in the water. Any chest strap based HRM is going to have issues staying on while pushing off the wall, although I know some people who can do it. A tri top would alleviate the problem.

Any 2.4 GHz HRM (ANT+, BT, Polar W.I.N.D) isn't going to read well underwater. The Polar V800 and RCX5 have a hybrid sensor with a 500 MHz transmitter for the water.

I'm hoping to be able to see the reading within a few seconds so I can monitor hr while swimming on an interval. On the bike it works better but with swimming you have to be stationary to take it and the HR drops pretty quickly. But if it works more power to you!

Get a Wahoo Tickr HRM, there are 3 versions I think and the higher end version has a means of storing your HR data while swimming and can be uploaded to your fitness app (wahoo's own version of strava).

My Suunto Ambit 3 also has a HRM that uploaded my HR into my watch.

I have never had success with this. I can take my pulse any time in normal circumstances, but I can never find my pulse when in the water. I don't know if somehow having the rest of my body underwater makes my pulse harder to detect, or it is the challenge of doing it while fatigued, or both. Regardless, it does not work for me either.
