A couple more optimized drivetrain questions
Quote | Reply
1. Does a brand new cassette need to be cleaned as a new chain does? I assume not, they don't feel like they're covered with factory grease.

2. If a cassette does need to be cleaned, same process of mineral spirits and denatured alcohol as with a chain?

3. Remove the chainring(s) and clean with spirits/alcohol as well?

4. What about the derailleur pulleys? If they are removed and cleaned, what do you lube them with when you put them back on?

Thanks,
-Colin

You don't need to do anything to new cassettes, chainrings, or derailleurs.

Thanks. But used rings and pulleys? Of course my new ride came with a factory chain on it, so I want to clean the gunk off the rings and pulleys (got a new cassette for my race wheels).

If the chainrings and derailleur pulleys have dirty grease on them, I would just wipe it off.

I'd definitely give components exposed to oil a thorough clean.
