Post workout recovery

So I'm experimenting with different post workout recovery options but I want to see what slowtwitch's opinion on this touchy subject is.

1. I see almost every brand now has their own "recovery mix" the issue with these are how pricey they are. Granted if they are worth it then I guess it's just something I'll have to suck up and pay.

2. I used to body build.... so I understand how important protein and carbs are to recovery and all the many more options of protein mixed on that side of the spectrum. I could maybe grab a protein and add a carb mix and create my own mix?

3. Chocolate milk which we all know to be the original but also most boring option on the list. IMO

Before those questions, ask these:

1. Was today's workout significantly depleting (e.g. 2.5+ hours of base, 1+ hour of threshold)? If No- No special Recovery
2. Is your next workout imporant (e.g. your long workout or a speed session)? If No - No Special Recovery
3. Is your next workout (which is important) within the next 24 hours? If no- No Special Recovery

Beyond that there is the question of protein vs. carbohydrate.
Within 48 hours of a normal workout with typical "balanced" diet your glycogen stores ought to be fine for the next workout. You do not need to constantly be topped up with carbohydrate and it may be detrimental to both body composition and aerobic development.

If you did exercise that will require muscle rebuilding, protein is useful. 20g at a time. And additional 20g prior to bed. These workouts would be a series of difficult sprints, hard low cadence climbing, weight lifting, running outside your normal routine that will cause additional soreness etc.

Those will then drive what you ought to be consuming.
Obviously not an all inclusive list, but the beginnings of a recommendation.
