....and phelps' suit in Beijing and the speed of that pool. It feels like it should add up to 8-10 seconds

Things that changed from '84 to '08 (that I can recall)

better pools
better lane lines in those better pools.
body suit vs banana hammock
double cap & dome cap vs no cap / bald / wrinkly latex (offset somewhat by Phelps' giant ears)
track start vs forward start
can't remember if they had the kicker on the blocks in '08?
underwaters off the start and turns vs get up and swim (fly, back, free)
breathing every stroke in the 200 fly or IM fly (in '84 no-one did that, at least that I saw)
backstroke turns (flip vs spin or suicide turns)
breaststroke pullouts (I think they allowed UW dolphin around '08)
wave breaststroke vs keep your head above the water...

84 pool is still decent and has the newer lane ropes and blocks. Penny Heyns broke 4 WR at the Janet Evans meet in 99.

Eric Hedlin - 15:08 in the final to punch his ticket.

Sydney Pickrem broke her own 2IM record - 2:09.5

22.2 for Loginov in the 50. If he can find another couple of tenths by Budapest...

Hard to believe that a sub 1:58 2fly doesn't qualify for Worlds. There is so much depth there.

Masse had the outstanding performance of the meet, by far...

A couple more would be salt water pools, and the extra empty outside lane that a lot of pools incorporate to lessen the middle lane advantage. They also pay more attention to currents now too, but even lately there have been some mistakes. No one really paid attention back then to what was going on with the pool pumps running during a race. And lastly you talked about the fly breathing every stroke, you have to also throw in there the fairly new 3/2/3 breathing pattern for free(aka WR setter Sun Yang, and now a bunch of other distance guys)

True, I was mostly just talking about Phelps' 400IM. He breathes every 2 on free.

Can't remember what Baumann did. Back then, IIRC some guys were breathing 2, some 3...
