One of my favorite movies. Rickles was great in this.

I've been a fan of his insulting style of comedy and humor for years. In our increasingly overly politically correct work, Don's style I sense fell out of favour - but when and if you truly understood Don and where he was coming from he was never laughing at you, he was laughing with you.

RIP

One of my favorite movies of all time, the back-and-forth between him and Donald Sutherland's Oddball was hysterical.

From a Navy Chief Facebook page.

Though he was not a Chief, his CPO Sharkey in the mid '70s made every one in America know what a Navy Chief was although his was a caricature of a real chief. He served in the Navy he was a Seaman 1st Class on a PT Boat Tender in the South Pacific during WW II. He once said Sharkey was a collage of the chiefs he knew during his navy time, some good men and leaders some not so much, Rest in Peace CPO Sharkey/ Seaman 1st Class Rickles, you may stand relieved we have the watch. We had a picture of him in one our messes standing on a box screaming at someone. I loved that picture and saw fellow chiefs do nearly the same thing. It was supposed to be a caricature of us, but it was actually pretty damn close in a lot of ways.

The character you'll find some of you in is Rain Man!
