I am attempting to go to a 1x10 setup this year on my tri bike. I got the Sram Apex1 RD because I am don't want to spend too much money on this and am also trying to do this without pissing off the spousal unit too much.
The issue I am having is getting the RD to go into the lowest gear. Currently I am using a 11-36 cassette. It will shift smoothly down from 10 through 4, but it stops at three. Loosening the barrel adjuster, I can get it to go into 3 and 2, and sometimes will go into 1 with the barrel adjuster all the way out. In those cases, the shifting up the cassette is horrible; jumping 2-3 gears, grinding or not shifting at all. I have replaced the shifter cable and cleaned the cable casings.
Compatibility wise, it appears the Apex1 RD should work all the way for an 11-42. What can I do to make it work? Any suggestions are appreciated. I am trying to become more competent at working on my bike, and this is something that I feel I should be able to do.
