Nothing touchy about an X5. It's very good at what it's made for. What it's not made for is offroading.

When I was young and dumb I nearly got stranded on Pismo beach in a Chevy Corsica. We camped overnight. Woke up the next morning to the ocean lapping at our tent. Driving back If I hadn't gunned it over a tidal backwash Dukes of Hazard style the car might still be there today.

Lots of great videos of cars getting washed away at the Oceano Dunes! Especially the ones trying to get across the creek.

The front end made one hell of a crunch when it landed. I was old enough to know not to slow down on an obstacle in the sand.

You are wise, grasshopper. The dunes and that creek have ruined many a holiday.

Exactly. Plenty of grunt in the engine and it's not like that beach is a technical track requiring full diff-locks and raised suspension.
In 2015 I took the family along a long beach in a remote coastal town (a 4x4 haven) in an old '99 ML430. Forgot to let the air out and with the low clearance and rigid mud flaps we very nearly got into trouble. I did not want to be that 'guy in the Benz'! Years earlier I had no such problem in the '83 g-wagen that had capability the others could only dream of.

Awesome.
Ok, the fat slob in the Explorer with the young (Filipino?) woman. Huh???
I must have watched a couple dozen of those videos last night. Fascinating. Yesterday afternoon I would have asked, "who brings a BIG ASS fifth wheel toy hauler out onto the sand?" Now I know.
I only got stuck once - when I bottomed out on a small hill. I was able to dig out fairly quickly. But some of those dudes... wow.

I wonder if that model was front wheel or all wheel drive.

When did an X5 become a douche car? That car sufficient ability for those conditions ... in the right hands. But then seems like that guy could have bogged a top end landctuiser.

Looks like they don't make the front wheel drive version anymore but the base model is rear wheel drive.
Subaru is right :)
4 of the 5 family cars are currently Subies, I put mine to good use every week. My gf and I went to get gas the other weekend one state over, (35 cents a gal cheaper, and the same distance as in state gas). Accidentally drove 200 miles of forest service and random dirt roads. This last weekend we went father into our state to the rural farm land, drove 150 miles on dirt and gravel there.
Nothing like a stock Impreza :) And her '06 Leggy is just as fun and capable, though she'll probably get her dad's '15 Outback soon.
Good times :)
(Also for anyone actually interested, this is pretty off topic but I still like rambling about my interests... :) I plan on trading my mom cars soon. I'm in a 16 Impreza sport, she has a 14 Crosstrek. I want the crosstrek and to add an Anderson Design 2" lift, Method MR502's wrapped in Grabber AT2's, primitive racing skid plates, cut the front bumper, lights, and maybe someday a Tepui rooftop tent :)
